on cleaning out the fridge

I've been using a recipe book less and my creativity and supercook more.  It's so much more fun to look at what you've got and get innovative with recipes; less waste, more fun.

I work my fridge like I work my Rummikub rack - use the bottom shelves to organize, and use the top shelf as a departure dock.

dry shampoo: love it or loathe it?

I've been shampooing, blow-drying, and then either curling or flat-ironing my hair ever since I can remember.  Every day.  My hair always feels so soft after a fresh cut, but then it lulls back into an over-dried mess that tangles in the middle of a blow-dry.  Before I reverted back to my natural hair color, the bleach in my blonde hair made it even worse, but I would use baby powder when I skipped a day of washing to keep it from getting greasy.  Only problem was, the baby powder was somewhat clumpy, and I couldn't always blow-dry it all out.  I recently started using Klorane's dry shampoo and LOVE it.  I got the aerosol kind that you spray at your roots whenever you skip a day of washing, and I just blow dry it out.  My hair is lighter with more volume than on the days I wash and then blow-dry.  And, of course, it takes less time and is much less damaging to my hair.  Have you ever tried dry shampoo?  Do you love it or loathe it?

Print

Do you ever wonder why some people use bold to emphasize something whereas other people use all caps?  And who underlines anymore?  Underlining is a holdover from printing presses.  It meant that the printer should set the font in italics.  Underline was never actually meant to be printed.  When people use all caps I feel like they're screaming at me.  Or they're super busy.  I think fonts and styles we say has something to do with our personalities.  But I wonder what it says about us.  That we're quirky?  That we're loud?  That swirlies are girly?  Sometimes we're intentional with these aspects of written language, and sometimes we're too rushed.  But I think they have more rhetorical effect than we realize.  Someone should do a study on this.  I should do a study on this.  I'm sure people have done studies on this.  I should read the studies done on this.

dresses or shorts?

I own more summer dresses than I do pairs of shorts.  They're just too easy and comfortable not to wear!  I went to the GAP factory store last week to buy a pair of shorts (or two - bogo week!) and ended up with two dresses as well.  Soft wrap dresses are the best.  So what do you like better during the summer ... dresses or shorts?

weekend to monday

Most of us wake up and completely forget about the rest of the weekend when Monday morning's alarm clock rings and we start mentally putting together our to-do list before we even get out of bed:  make the coffee, check my e-mail, reply to that one student, pack lunch, oatmeal? eggs? cream of wheat?  cold cereal it is...  But let's talk about what our weekends not only to give us the sanity to face Monday but also as reminders of weekend fun.  Who knows.  Maybe it'll inspire us to relive it this week.

My husband and I went to the mountains for a retreat.  I always forget just how much  I love the mountains.  I took my black and white canvas tote, my Bob Dylan playlist, and my favorite jeans.

This song was stuck in my head for about 36 hours.  Not exactly proud of it.

The village is pretty cute.

Got my iced chai latte with soy ... perfect for 85-degree weather.

Made a roasted chicken with roasted carrots and potatoes, watermelon, salad, and rolls for dinner on Sunday night and my parents came over.
